On the back shelf of my aunt’s tiny kitchen sat a pomegranate that never seemed to rot, glossy and heavy like it had swallowed a whole night sky. I used to sneak in after dinner, when the house was quiet, and cut it open just a little, counting the seeds like they were answers to questions I didn’t know how to ask yet. The more I stared, the more the shapes around it began to look alive: sharp leaves like whispers, a shadowy bulb of fruit like a held breath, and that half-hidden eye watching from the edge, as if the pantry itself was keeping score. One winter I finally drew it all down in thick black strokes, messy and smudged from my fingers, because I was afraid if I didn’t, the orchard in my head would dissapear by morning. And honestly, some nights it still feels like that eye is looking right back at me, waiting for the next seed to fall.
