He set the tall vase in the middle of it all and watched the fronds flare out, huge and loud in the quiet, like a firework that decided to stay. Some nights he’d stand beside it, half turned, half gone, practicing what he’d say if she came back for her things. He told himself the plant was a promise: something living, something stubborn. But really it was a marker, a dark burst against pale walls, reminding him that even the simplest room can still hold a whole story, messy and unfinished.
