The room was painted the color of late-afternoon sun, the kind that makes dust look like it’s dancing, even when nobody is. Three people sat in it like they were waiting for a kettle to sing, but the stove was cold and the air felt thick with unsaid things. The tall one kept his hands together, like he was holding a thought he didn’t trust yet. The girl in stripes leaned low, listening to the floorboards as if they might confess where her father went, and the pale woman stared past the plants, past the big pink circles of light, to a place only she could see. They’d moved the whole house around that morning, dragging pots and woven nets and branches inside, trying to make a small jungle of safety. Someone said it would help, that new shapes could trick the heart into starting over. It almost worked, too—right up until the silence remembered its own name.
