They called him Bramble, the town’s night watchdog, even though he wore a moth-eaten sweater like a shy librarian and never barked unless the sky was wrong. On the evening the two pale moons showed up, one blush and one sickly green, he stood perfectly still in the empty lot behind the radio tower, mouth open like he was laughing at a joke nobody else could hear. Folks said his left eye had turned into a little target after he stared too long at the broadcast light, and that it let him see the thin seams in the world where the night leaks in. I followed him once, mostly to prove I wasnt scared, and he led me to a door that wasnt there yesterday, just hanging in the air between those two moons. He didn’t go through; he just watched me, tail low, like he already knew what I’d find. When I stepped back out, the moons were gone, and the only thing left was the smell of ozone and Bramble’s quiet grin, like he’d been keeping that secret for years.
