They found the wasp the size of a door hanging over the mudflats, wings half-see through like old tracing paper, buzzing without sound. Beyond it, the rigs sat out in the grey water, all angles and rust and patient lights, like they’d been waiting for years to tell someone the truth. She came down to the shore with a folder of clippings and smudged notes, trying to piece together her father’s last season out there, the one nobody would talk about. Each scrap she pinned to the page felt like a promise, but the wind kept flipping corners loose, and the pencil lines wouldn’t stay straight. The wasp didn’t attack, it just hovered, guarding the thin space between what was written and what was forgoten, as if saying: keep going, even if the story comes out crooked.
