He found the thin seam of light in the hallway wall the way you find a secret in an old house, by accident and then by need. The silhouette in the picture is him on the third night, when the plaster started to feel warm and the glow pulsed like something sleeping behind it. He pressed his face close, almost kissing the brightness, and it tasted like metal and rain. A faint red streak appeared where his lips touched, not blood exactly, more like the wall was remembering him back. He shouldve walked away, but he’d spent weeks swallowing words he couldn’t say to anyone, and the light felt like a mouth that would finally listen. When he leaned in again, the seam widened just a breath, and for a second he heard his own voice on the other side, soft and brave, saying the things he’d been too scared to admit.
