The tall reeds on the right were the quiet one, thin as old letters, forever reaching up as if they could scratch a message into the pink morning sky. I found them after moving into the apartment with nothing but a suitcase and a too-loud heart, and I painted the room behind them as bands of yellow and rust, the way sunrise feels when you havent slept. Some days I swear the plants lean closer to each other at night, whispering about what they’ve seen, and by morning they’re back in place, pretending they never moved at all.
