He was always late, even when there was nowhere left to go. In the picture he’s caught mid-stride, bent forward like the wind is pulling him by the ribs, his red-striped coat flapping like a warning flag. The spotted dog runs ahead, not scared, just certain, as if it knows the route better than any map. A small black bird keeps pace under their legs, a stubborn little witness that refuses to be shaken off. People in the old neighborhood used to say the man ran to outrun his own name, and the dog ran because it had once been left behind and swore never again. On the day this was painted, the sky was the color of weak tea and the city was quiet in that uneasy way, and someone watching from a doorway thought, for a second, that the three of them were the same story told in different bodies. If you look close, you can almost hear it: shoes scraping, paws drumming, wings trying not to panic.
