Above it, a tiny lemur clung to a leafy branch, staring so hard you could almost hear its thoughts, like it was counting every ripple for secrets. People in town said the bird was a wanderer that got lost after a storm, and the lemur was a runaway from a traveling show, but I think they just found each other on a quiet afternoon when nobody was looking. The bird couldn’t climb and the lemur couldn’t swim, so they made a pact: the bird would watch the ground for danger, and the lemur would watch the sky for trouble, and together they’d keep the strange little garden safe. Some evenings the flowers droop like they’re tired, and the water reflects their shapes in wobbly lines, and it feels like the whole scene is holding its breath, waiting for the next adventure to start.
