He walked the uneven stone steps like he’d done a hundred times in his head, suitcase tapping his leg, hat pulled low against a wind that didn’t feel real. Above him a giant fish drifted through the green sky, slow as a thought you can’t quite catch, its fins fanning the air like water. The locals used to say the lake had a second surface, one up in the clouds, and if you followed the path at dusk you might see what had swam away from you years ago. He didn’t come for the little house on the hill, not exactly, though the windows still looked warm and familiar; he came because he’d promised a kid version of himself he’d return when the moon was round and the lilies were open. As the fish passed overhead, orange leaves and tiny petals spun in its wake, and for a second he swear he heard a splash from the sky, like the world finally remembering where it put his lost summer.
