Up close, its shell wasn’t a shell at all but a patchwork map of places no one talks about anymore: a red stripe for the diner that burned down, pale blue for the river that got rerouted, little dots for the hidden gardens behind locked gates. Someone had outlined it in bold black, then added those bright, petal-like marks around it, as if the beetle carried its own warning halo. Mara swore it was her brother’s doing, because he used to draw bugs whenever he was scared, and he’d gone missing the summer the trains stopped. She traced the crooked lines with her fingertip and felt the oddest thing, like the mural was humming, telling her to follow the colors, not the roads. So she did, even though it sounded kinda stupid, and the city started giving up its secrets one messy, beautiful clue at a time.
