I found the beetle the day the old library shut its doors for good, when pages were being tossed like they didnt matter anymore. I slipped a handful into my pocket, not even sure why, and later I tore them into small tiles and pressed them into its belly like a quiet armor. The black shell with those soft yellow spots came from a memory of summer nights on a porch light, when everything felt bigger and kinder. Around it I painted blocky rooms of pale blue, dusty pink, and tired cream, like the little city squares we walk through without noticing. The beetle stands there anyway, stitched from scraps, carrying the last bits of stories on its back, stubborn and calm, as if it knows where all the lost words went.
