The first time the whale surfaced, it did it like a secret being told too late, pushing up through the rough water as if the sea had been holding its breath for days. Above it, the black birds circled in a loose ring, not hunting, just watching, like they were waiting for something to happen. On the shore, someone had nailed a red square of cloth to a broken frame, bright as a warning sign, bright as a wound, and the wind kept snapping it so hard it sounded like distant thunder. Folks in the village said the square was an old signal for safe passage, but no one agreed what kind of passage, or for who. The whale stayed near that floating line of red for three nights, then vanished at dawn, and the birds followed, leaving only the stain of color in everyones eyes, like a memory you can’t wash off.
