Bright scraps of color surfaced from the soil—yellow like a torn note, spotted gold like a small animal’s coat—until the whole place became a patchwork garden stitched together by something unseen. Mira swore she heard the rocks humming under the speckled sand, and for a second she felt the world shift, as if this was the real landscape and the old one was the dream. She left before dark, but the next day the shapes were still there, growing louder, and she knew the hill had finally decided to remember itself.
