He kept the photograph folded in his wallet till the corners went soft, the man’s face smudged by heat and years, like a memory you can’t quite hold. When the bus dropped him at the edge of nowhere, the desert was quiet except for wind scraping sand across old paperwork, receipts and letters that had somehow ended up out there, bleached and half readable. He pinned a yellow note to the sky in his mind, a promise he never sent, and watched the blue wash creep over everything like cooling paint. The cactus stood up like a stubborn witness, arms raised as if it knew the whole story and wouldnt tell. He tried to sketch the horizon but it kept dissolving into pale stains, so he let it, letting the land swallow his words while the portrait stared back, asking if he’d finally come home or just gotten lost the long way.
