He showed up to the closing-night show wearing a jacket that still smelled like rain and spraypaint, and on his head a crown made from the hard green leaves he’d stolen off a rooftop plant. Nobody asked why, not out loud anyway. The city had been chewing him up for months, billboards peeled over billboards, old posters fighting to stay seen, and he’d started to feel like just another layer. So he made himself into something you couldn’t ignore: a bright yellow spear splitting the noise, leaves flaring like warning signs. He said the plant taught him how to survive—hold water when you can, grow sharp when you have to. Later, when the gallery emptied and the music died, he left the crown behind on the floor, like he’d finally put down a role he was tired of playing, but the walls kept his stare, cracked and loud, forever refusing to fade.
