Above him, a huge cloud leaned out of the blue as if it had just been exhaled by the hills, a slow white sigh with a faint blush at its base, the color of something almost said. He’d been sending messages by folding scraps of old letters into paper planes, hoping one would find the person who left without goodbye. Most of them fell into the dark strip of sea, but this one caught a strange updraft that rose from a sharp, glassy triangle of light, and the cloud answered by swelling bigger, louder, softer all at once. They say if you wait long enough, the sky writes back in weather, and that day he swear it did, spelling a direction only he could read before the wind tried to erase it.
