He showed up in the empty studio wearing that crinkly silver suit like he’d just walked out of a quarantine zone, except where a face should be there was a whole little tree spilling over his helmet rim, leaves brushing the air like they were listening. Strapped to his chest was an old monitor full of static and faint whispers, the kind you hear when you turn the dial at midnight and hit a station that isnt meant for you. He said the city had started forgetting its own seasons, so he built a receiver to catch the lost springtime, wired it into a battered box on the floor and waited for the green to answer back. The first time he powered it on, the leaves twitched in time with the hum, and the room smelled like rain on hot pavement. He never took the suit off after that, scared that if the signal dropped, he’d be just another man with nothing growing inside him.
