Above, a single giant eye hung in the sky, not cruel exactly, just awake, as if the whole day was holding its breath to see what he’d do next. Birds cut through the warm air and the clouds looked pasted on, too perfect, like someone fixed the weather by hand. They say he came here after leaving a letter unmailed, after saying goodbye to nobody in particular, and this was the only place his thoughts would finally sit still. Every step he took, the colors changed around him, pink to gold to green, and he realized the eye wasn’t watching to judge him. It was watching to remember, so he wouldn’t have to.
