The rackets are piled up like gossiping friends, all leaning in close on that loud pink court, their strings crisscrossed and scuffed from a hundred stubborn rallies. I found them after the club’s last summer tournament, when the sun was going down and everyone had already left for lemonade and prizes. One green ball sat there like it was waiting for one more serve, still warm from being chased, still kind of hopeful. I carried the whole messy bundle home, paint on my hands and clay dust on my shoes, thinking about how games end but the noise of them doesn’t. Every stripe and scratch feels like a name I almost remember, the kind you forget until you hear it shouted across a court again.
