She followed the pale ribbon of sand as it curled between blunt cliffs and patches of stubborn flowers, pinks and whites bursting out like they refused to be quiet. Out on the water the blue sat heavy and flat, almost too calm, but near her feet the colors kept shifting—rust red, soft lilac, a smear of green like a secret. They said a house used to stand up there, bright as chalk, where people waited for fishermen that never came home. Mara wasn’t waiting for anyone, not really, but she still climbed until the wind tasted like salt and memories. She left a single bloom on the edge and walked away, a little lighter, like the sea had finally agreed to let something go.
