He showed up the day the sky went strange-yellow, like someone spilled sunlight and forgot to clean it up. The bear moved slow across the patchwork ground, nose low, as if reading a map written in scent and dust. Around him the trees didn’t behave like trees anymore; they stood as bright shapes and bristly textures, blue and orange trunks, leafy stamps, shadows made of dots. People in town said the woods were changing, getting louder in color but quieter in sound, and maybe that was why he wandered in so calm, not scared of the weirdness at all. I like to think he was looking for the old forest he remembered, and instead found this new one trying its best to be beautiful, even if it was a little messy and not quite right.
