They said the manor was quiet now, that the war had moved on and left only echoes in the hills, but Mara didnt believe in quiet. She sat in her pale dress like she was headed to a dance, not a fight, the rifle heavy and strange against her bare arms. Behind her, Luc kept his cheek to the stock, eyes narrowed, listening for the click of boots on stone. The third figure, half-lost in the paint and shadows, had been the one to knock at midnight with a warning and a map drawn on a torn napkin. When the first lantern bobbed at the edge of the field, Mara felt her breath snag, then settle; she aimed where the orchard thinned, where a man would think no one was watching. They werent hunters, not really, just people who'd run out of places to run, and tonight the soft folds of fabric and the sharp smell of gun oil had to make room for courage, even if it came out shaky and a little late.
