I found the river on a night when sleep wouldnt come, a long black current cutting through brown silence like a torn piece of velvet. Someone had stitched tiny lights along its edge, not in a neat way, more like they were in a hurry or they were afraid the dark might swallow the whole thing. The pale fan-shaped islands drifted near the bank, whispering in thin ink lines, as if they were old letters folded and refolded till the creases became a map. I kept tracing the little constellations with my finger, thinking of a friend who left town without saying goodbye, and how their absence still glows in small places when you least expect it. By morning the river was still there, calm and stubborn, and I swear it looked a bit wider, like it had taken something heavy from me and carried it on.
