The strange thing was their faces had already started to drift away, replaced by a shard of deep blue paper, like a piece of night sky torn from a secret letter. No one in town talked about it, but everyone knew: when two people love too hard and too quiet, the words they never say pile up and spill out as color. The pink line looping around them was drawn in a hurry, a promise that tried to circle back and fix what was cracking, but it only made the silence louder. They stayed there anyway, in that pale open space, learning to say goodbye without a mouth, and somehow it still felt tender, even a little bit hopefull.
