He kept a small blue wing pinned near his ankle, a bit of sky he’d found in a gutter on a rainy morning, and he swore it was the only thing that still belonged to him. Some days he’d feel it flutter, just once, and he’d think he could cut the threads and walk out clean. But the hand always waited, patient as gravity, and the room stayed quiet, as if silence itself was part of the contract.
