In the peeling glow of a late streetlamp, Mara learned to wear her red devil mask the way other people wore coats, casual and neccessary. The city loved her when she was sharp-edged and fearless, when she bargained hard at the market and never looked down first. But the truth was always there, pressed against her cheek like a second breath: the quieter face beneath, with tired eyes and a hoop earring she kept touching when she lied. She’d found the mask in a pawn shop after a storm, wedged between cracked mirrors and old wedding rings, and the owner swore it only fit people who were trying to outrun their own hearts. That night she walked home, both faces overlapping in every shop window, and realized the mask wasn’t hiding her at all. It was showing what she’d been carrying for years, the part of her that wanted to bite back, and the part that just wanted to be seen.
