She started tucking other pieces into it, a curl of shell here, a pale shard there, as if she could rebuild what the sea had unmade. The pink wedge underneath was just a scrap of paper at first, but it became a little boat, a blush of sunset, a reminder that even cracked things can still carry light. She kept it by the window, and some nights she swore she could hear the tide whispering thru it, telling her not to rush the mending.
