Nobody remembers when the one-eyed clerk started showing up in the post office ledger, but his stamp is there in faded purple, neat as a promise. He wore a stiff little collar like he was trying to be proper, yet his single eye was always too wide, reading every secret on every envelope before it even got licked shut. Folks said he could spot lies in handwriting, like the ink would shiver and give itself away. One winter a bag of lost letters turned up behind the sorting cabinet, all addressed to the same name that dosen’t exist, and each one had a tiny cutout eye glued to the corner, watching. The clerk opened his mouth to explain, but only wind and old glue came out, and the room smelled like dust and far-away cities. After that, the townspeople started writing kinder things, just in case he was still looking.
